Dimitrios Athanasiou is a Civil Engineer (National Technical University of Athens, Greece) and holds a degree in International Construction Management (University of Leeds, UK). He is also a graduate of the Hellenic School of Public Administration. He is a senior energy efficiency expert with 15 years of experience on European energy efficiency policy.
He worked in the European Commission for 6 years (2017-2022) as a policy officer in DG Energy (Buildings Team/ Energy Efficiency Unit). His work focused on the proper implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, among others on the cost-optimal calculation methodologies, the long-term renovation strategies and the nearly zero-energy buildings uptake within the EU.
Prior to joining the European Commission, Dimitris worked as Ministers’ Consultant for 8 years (2009-2016) in the area of energy efficiency in the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy. He also worked in different positions both in the public and private sectors for several years where he practiced civil engineering.
Dimitris is currently a senior energy efficiency and policy expert in the Institute for European Energy and Climate Policy (IEECP), where he coordinates and/or manages various European-funded projects (LIFE, Horizon Europe, etc.) and contract services with regards to buildings and energy efficiency policy, such as: SRI2MARKET (coordinator), EBENTO, OBSERVE (coordinator), DeCO2, ReLIFE, InEEXs.
