Equitable and sustainable rural development: the role of the clean industrial deal – EUSEW 2025 session

Brussels and online - June 12, 2025

In the pursuit of a clean and just transition, rural areas in Europe are often left behind, even though rural populations are at a significantly higher risk of facing poverty and social exclusion. Climate and energy action have, however, been proven to be an efficient pathway to generate opportunities for rural communities to substantially contribute to more resilient, ecosystem-enhancing and nature-based competitive development. This event aims to bring forward solutions for sustainable and equitable rural development, emphasising the importance of integrating social, economic, and environmental considerations and drawing upon the developments of the four initiatives RENOVERTY, RURENER, RURALITIES and JUST PEPP. In view of the new Commission and the new challenges posed by the policy priorities related to the Clean Industrial Deal, it is of upmost importance to prepare the ground for innovative solutions that leave no one behind. Bringing together experts with different backgrounds, this session will prepare the ground to ensure that the road ahead involves the often-forgotten rural areas and their communities, putting them at the centre of their own territories’ development.
