In a rapidly changing climate, the role of forest managers is evolving significantly. Beyond traditional timber production, forests are increasingly valued for their carbon sequestration potential, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. To help practitioners navigate this shift, the OptFor-EU project has released its fourth Practice Abstract titled “Business Model Canvas (BMC) for Future Forest Management under Decarbonisation”.
This new resource offers a structured approach for forest managers to design sustainable, economically viable pathways that prioritize climate resilience and decarbonisation. By using Business Model Canvas, managers can clearly map out their value propositions, shifting the focus from wood production as a sole objective to a model where timber becomes a co-benefit of climate-smart management.
The Practice Abstract outlines how managers can define value propositions that extend to include carbon sequestration, biodiversity benefits, and water regulation. It also guides managers in identifying new customer segments, such as carbon market actors, construction companies, and public authorities, while building long-term partnerships based on transparent climate reporting. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of the OptFor-EU Decision Support System (DSS) to conduct scenario planning, risk assessment, and carbon quantification.
Finally, the document helps practitioners explore diverse revenue innovation strategies, such as carbon credits and payments for ecosystem services, to balance the costs of monitoring, certification, and adaptive silviculture.
