Forests are essential for climate change mitigation and adaptation, yet they face significant challenges due to institutional gaps, policy fragmentation, and governance inefficiencies. The OptFor-EU project has addressed these issues by developing actionable policy recommendations aimed at enhancing the resilience of Europe’s forests and their value chains.
The recently published Policy Brief Enhancing Climate Resilience in Forest Management: Recommendations from OptFor-EU and the Interim Report on Policy Recommendations summarise the project’s key findings. The documents highlight that a lack of streamlined institutional frameworks and fragmented policies—especially the division between forest and agricultural policies—are major obstacles to adopting climate mitigation strategies. Furthermore, limited financial support and a lack of knowledge on climate-smart forestry practices also pose significant challenges.
To overcome these barriers, the OptFor-EU project recommends developing comprehensive policy frameworks that integrate climate mitigation and adaptation strategies into national forest management policies. These policies should be regularly updated to reflect new scientific findings. Increasing financial support for forest management initiatives and fostering collaboration across all governance levels—from the EU to local communities—are also crucial steps. The project also emphasizes the importance of stakeholder engagement, involving diverse groups in decision-making to ensure policies are inclusive and effective.
These documents serve as a roadmap for policymakers, forest managers, and other stakeholders, offering clear and actionable guidance for a more sustainable future for Europe’s forests. They underscore the importance of coordinated action and shared responsibility in ensuring the long-term health and resilience of these vital ecosystems.
