The DeCO₂ and DigiBUILD projects are dedicated to advancing digitalisation and circular renovation practices in the building sector to enhance sustainability, efficiency, and transparency. Together, they launched a survey, aiming to identify and analyse the barriers and enabling conditions that influence the adoption of these innovative approaches across various dimensions, including technical, informational, market, social, organisational, policy, and regulatory aspects. Specifically, the partners seek to understand challenges such as interoperability issues, implementation complexity, awareness gaps, financial viability, stakeholder acceptance, regulation compliance, and standardisation efforts.
This survey’s key focus is the use of digital tools such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital twins, digital building logbooks, renovation passports, and other emerging technologies that support data-driven decision-making in the renovation and construction industry. Additionally, the projects explore the adoption of circular renovation practices, including the use of reused and recycled materials, byproducts from industrial symbiosis, agricultural waste such as straw and sawdust, bio-based materials like polyurethane foam, and the reutilization of building rubble to minimise environmental impact.
